Katelyn has had a rough few days. Wednesday seemed fine. I bathed her and we had cuddle time. She was still on .75 liters of oxygen at around 30% which is high for her. She had a spell while I was there but nothing like last week. Her nurse Jeremiah, was so nice and it was fun to see a male nurse talk to her and call her sweetie. I left her in good hands and headed home to Hubby for a weekend alone as Emma was going camping with my parents until Sunday. Thursday I woke up and enjoyed the morning at home with Colt but I wanted to go see the baby because I knew she was going to be getting her first set of immunizations. Colt and I arranged to meet his parents at 8 because we had signed up for the CPR class that night. Funny thing about the CPR class, I kind of remembered what I learned in high school. It was a little scary to think about what I would have to do if Katelyn stopped breathing, actually it was REALLY scary. We passed the class, not that we had to, and headed back to see Mini. Gramma JuJee held her for a little while until it was time to change her bum. Even though I asked her if she wanted to help Gramma wasn't ready to help but she seemed impressed at the way I handled Mini and wasn't afraid of her. I like to think I have become good at reading Katelyn and the things she needs. I changed her clothes and put a new onesie on her.
She isn't scared, I know that's what it looks like but she is hungry. She drank her whole bottle in 15 minutes and was ready for bed. I tucked her in after a few pictures and we left for home.
I love how she looks like she is

Friday when I woke up I thought for sure it was around 9:30 but when I looked sleepily at my alarm clock, it shocked me with 11:47 staring back at me. OOPS. To top it off I missed 3 calls because I forgot to turn the ringer back on. I listened to my voice mail and wasn't happy to get a call from the NICU. It seemed that Katelyn had a really rough night and wasn't doing well. I immediately called to check on her. Chelsea was her nurse and after talking to her I decided to hurry and dress and go visit her. She looked so pale and very tired when I got there. I could tell she wasn't feeling good. They had put her back on the high flow nasal cannula because she had too many apnea episodes during the night. I stood by her bed telling her it was okay and I cried for her. She looked exhausted. She grunted at me and then her oxygen began to drop. I had to go into another room and ask Gorgi a respiratory therapist, to come in and bump her oxygen up. Her nurse came in and we got ready to do her cares. Usually when I change Katelyn's diaper and take her temperature she complains the whole time. Her nurse told me that She hadn't taken a bottle all day because she was so tired and feeling yucky. I changed her and decided to hold her skin to skin in the hopes that it would help her regulate her shallow breathing. Katelyn wasn't too excited about the idea at first, crying a bit and being fussy, but the moment I put her between my breasts and told her to breathe with me she calmed down. It didn't take long for her to start breathing regularly and her heart rate calmed down. I held her for an hour reminding her that she needed to breathe deeply and calmly. Gorgi came in to check on us and adjust her oxygen and she mentioned how well Katie was doing. It was tough for me to put her back in bed but when I did I could see pink in her little cheeks and she looked better. Chelsea called me later after I went home to let me know that Katie was doing better. What a relief that news was.
When I visited her today she was back to her feisty little self. I got there around 2 and she was just waking up and ready to have another bottle. It seems that little Katelyn has quite a reputation with the nurses in the NICU. She is known for being the cutest little thing with the biggest attitude. The development team came in to listen to her breathe as she chowed down her bottle. It took her a few minutes to decide that it was what she wanted but once she got a drop of formula on her tongue it took her less than 15 minutes to finish it. She was so sassy today I had to tell her a few times not to be a crabby pants. Apparently this morning she got tired of having tubes in her nose and she pulled them all out, including her feeding tube. The tape made her face all red and she of course had to have everything replaced. They brought in a baby bouncer hoping that she will like the vibrations and a different point of view. She looked like a better baby and she made it tough for me to leave her once again. She was swaddled up and I put a warm rolled baby shirt against her tummy to help with her gassy tummy. (holy cow that girl can toot with the best of them) Every time I went to leave she would fuss and I would come back and tell her to just relax and go to sleep. I had another nurse, Trish, come in and tell me that everyone had been trying to soothe Katelyn all day and she thought it was great that I went in and she settled right down. Katelyn complained when I put her back in her crib but that just means she loves her momma. She will have one more vaccination tomorrow and I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will have an easier time processing all the extra things being put in her system. I sure hope we are still on track to bring her home by my birthday. Katelyn has 3 weeks to get big and strong. Keep it up pretty girl, we want you to come home!
Happy Easter Everyone!
